After wrapping up a wonderful Women’s Conference on Saturday afternoon the team spend the evening preparing for Church services on Sunday morning and Sunday evening. The ladies who had come from Point Sable for the conference decided to stay for an extra day to fellowship and Worship with the Bouca La Marre Church on Sunday. Sunday morning Pastor Bill Parker preached a message titled “God is Looking for Something but are you Looking for God?” He used the story of Mary and Martha to encourage the congregation not to get caught up in activity and in so doing, lose sight of God’s purpose and plan. Sunday evening Alfonso preached from Colossians 3 and John 14 with the topic being “keeping your focus on Christ and mortifying the sinful flesh.” Alfonso reported that there were many distractions during the Sunday evening service. People were understandably tired following the Women’s Conference so some were nodding off during service. It was also extremely hot and the bugs were in full force inside the church. On top of that, he reported that loud motorcycles kept driving past the church on the road just off of our campus (motor traffic never comes by on a Sunday evening), and finally, someone decided to stop their vehicle out in front of our church building and play their music, seemingly as loud as they could. At one point Alfonso stated he almost said “ok Lord, I guess the people just aren’t going to heard Your Word tonight”, and contemplated just going and sitting down. With God’s strength, he pushed through and eventually took his seat after the Lord was finished speaking. Alfonso stated, as he sat there, he watched as a man came up to the front of the church weeping. Pastor Pierre approached him and the two began talking. After several minutes Pastor Pierre introduced the weeping man as Mykal, the husband of one of the faithful ladies of the Boucan La Marre Church. He watched week after week as his wife (Madame Mykal) faithfully attended church and served the congregation while also severing him in their home. He was not a member of the Boucan La Marre Church but he decided to attend the service that evening and was so touched by the message the Lord delivered through Alfonso that he decided to commit his life to Christ. He had been convicted of his sin and inspired by the faithfulness of his God fearing wife! In that moment, the Scriptures came to life for the Boucan La Marre and Point Sable women who had attended our conference. What a wonderful way to end a wonderful weekend!
The ladies from Point Sable who attended the conference are teachers and workers at our school in Point Sable so they needed to be back in place for Monday morning, so at about 3 a.m., Pastor Pierre drove them as far up the mountain as he was able to take them in the truck, by that point the sun was beginning to rise and they were able to walk the remainder of the way on the “trail” through the brush.
Before leaving on Wednesday Alfonso will be having his annual meeting with the school teachers. Because things are so difficult on the island (and in Haiti in general) and resources are scarce, this is always a difficult meeting. Please continue to pray for our teachers and for resources to help make their jobs and lives a little easier.
As always, thank you for your support!
